A new resolution for a new year

I wrote this in January for the paper and thought I had uploaded to my blog but apparently I was mistaken. But better late than never. I thought of it today becasue I am making good on my new year’s resolution…It’s that time of the year again: the time where we, full of energy and hope for a better year than the previous, make resolutions and goals that the majority of us will never complete or reach.

Why do we do this year after year when so few of us follow through with our resolutions or make goals that are unreasonable and unobtainable

For many, it’s the allure of starting over with a clean slate, a way to erase the bad memories, the poor decisions or bad habits and to start fresh, a new way to improve on the old you. There’s the standard resolutions of promising to lose weight, to quit smoking, to get better grades, to find a better job or to get out of an unhealthy relationship. And although they are good resolutions and I commend those who make goals and actually achieve them – (I really would LOVE to succeed at the losing weight one!) – I’m going for something bigger this year.

I’m going to make this year about somebody else and not about me.

My resolution for 2012 is to be more of a philanthropist – to be more giving, both in time and money, to help at least 12 people or organizations throughout the year. Now, I won’t reach people the way the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has, but even on a small scale, one person can make a difference. Just imagine the possibilities if a group of people or an entire community banded together to make a difference in the lives of others.

In Tipton County, there are many charitable or non-profit organizations, which could use more help in a variety of ways. Local churches, schools and senior centers are just a few.

You don’t have to be rich to help someone else. You don’t even have to have money. You can help with your time and skills and be rewarded just the same. Whether you are a volunteer or a philanthropist, helping others is an accomplishment to be proud of.

So for 2012, if you haven’t made your New Year’s resolution yet, or if you are tired of making the same ones you never seem to fulfill, join me this year in starting a new year with a new resolution. An obtainable resolution. A resolution which will change not only your life, but also the lives of those you help. Join me in making a difference in our community this yea
